When Dr. Edmond Donald decided to start a school newspaper at Schwarz Academy in New Orleans, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Students at Schwarz have been expelled from traditional high schools, and many have run into trouble with the law. But after a field trip to the local newspaper, the students were inspired to expand their paper — what started as a single-page black and white leaflet is now a full color multi-page paper with sports, beauty, and current event sections. Through their paper, “Life at Schwarz,” students are learning to develop their voices.
