In New Orleans more than half of students attend charter schools. Paul Vallas, Superintendent of the Recovery School District, is a big fan of charter schools. He’s also an outsider—he’s from Chicago and he’s been on the job for less than two years.
In this podcast, Joe Daschbach, a research assistant at the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education at Teacher’s College at Columbia University, talks about Vallas’ push for charter schools, his performance as superintendent and whether New Orleans trusts him to fix the schools.

Amazing story. Even more amazing is Mr. Daschbach’s story. He is truly an amazing educator who was poised at one point to be a major business owner and gave it all up to make a difference in young lives. As a New Orleanian in exile, I am extremely proud to think of Mr. Daschbach as an example of what the soul of New Orleans really is.
