Paul Vallas knew his work was cut out for him when he agreed to take over New Orleans’ failing Recovery School District. 85% of his students were far behind grade level and at risk of dropping out, buildings were literally falling down, and many of his teachers were unqualified.
In his first year he’s accomplished a lot—but can he help the teenagers who were two, three and four years behind academically, or would they end up on the street?
When we met Brittne Jackson and Antoine Duplessis in the fall, the odds were stacked against them. Antoine was 16 and in the 8th grade, while Brittne was a 19-year-old senior who had failed part of the graduation test fourteen times. Was Paul Vallas able to reach these students and help them in time?
