At Learning Matters, we do more than make media about education, we encourage youth to make media for themselves. In 1998 we founded the Listen Up! Youth Media Network to connect youth filmmakers and their allies to resources, support, and projects, and to develop the field and achieve an authentic youth voice in the mass media.
Listen Up! is an umbrella for more than 150 organizations worldwide that helps youth produce films about their lives, schools and communities. We worked with youth to produce The Way We See It: Youth Speak Out on Education that aired nationally on PBS. Our Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet aired on the Independent Film Channel and won a George Foster Peabody Award, the highest honor in American Television. Now we’re producing Beyond Green, a documentary collection exploring how youth respond to environmental crises worldwide.
